Dear Members, Friends and Visitors,
Following on from the enormous success of the World Family Summit +4, held in Cairo, Egypt, from 1-3 December, I have the pleasure to share with you the great accomplishments achieved by the World Family Organization in 2008, which was a very productive and constructive year.
First of all, in the name of the WFO Executive Board and Members, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Minister of Social Solidarity of Egypt, His Excellency Mr. Al-Moselhi, for the warm hospitality and incredible support given in planning, inviting and hosting the World Family Summit +4. His active participation in every phase of the preparation was our biggest guarantee for the achieved success.
To Dr. Amany Asfour and Dr. Omnia Fahmi, respectively President and Vice-President of the Egyptian Business Women Association, our partner in organizing the World Family Summit +4, we want to demonstrate our acknowledge and gratitude for the tireless days and nights working with us in Paris and in Brazil to guarantee a perfect organization and logistics that were essential for success of the events. Thank you and your team!
Also, we would like to extend our thanks to Mr. Mohsen Louis , General Manager of the wonderful hotel Mena House Oberoi, for his patience in attending all of our demands and our hard negotiations to make sure that this marvelous hotel would be affordable for all participants.
The speakers of the World Family Summit +4 were outstanding. The theme of the World Family Summit – Lives in Balance “Ensuring the Rights” (Right to Survival – Right to Protection – Right to Development) was not easy to expose, discuss and reflect about solutions. And all of you have been so capable to deal with the expositions as well as responding the questions and contributing to the Cairo Declaration. Therefore, we would like to give a special note of gratitude!
As every year, the active support of the United Nations through the Director of the ECOSOC Office for Support and Coordination, Mr. Nikhil Seth, and the Chief of the NGO Section and Central Coordinator for the UN NGO IRENE, Mrs. Hanifa Mezoui, was priceless. Their international experience every year gives us a valuable support in formulating and negotiating the Final Declaration. Thank you once again!
Very impressive was also the active participation in every session of our Guest of Honor, Princess Fariha Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, of Kuwait, and her team. To them, our deepest expression of appreciation.
But, nothing could have happened so successfully if the 280 delegations from 74 countries representing all continents and all sectors of society were not there to actively direct the sessions and give us the inputs for the conclusions and the Cairo Declaration.
We would like also to express our gratitude to the Turkish Government and to the Minister of Women, Family, Children and Disable of Turkey, H.E. Mrs. Nimet Çubukçu, for welcoming us next year and organizing the World Family Summit +5. We know that the work is very hard, but we are sure that together we can continue our mission to pursue effective and tangible outcomes on behalf of better life for the families of the world.
Dear members and partners, the year of 2009 will start full of promises and challenges, especially because of the global economic crisis that insists to castigate Families everywhere. However, our hopes for a better future to all Families of the world will make our commitments to be present everyday on our desks and in the field, working towards the fulfillment of our duties in constructing the world that we want to the future generations. We must always keep in mind that working for Families is a concerted, coordinated and shared work. We all agree that the United Nations MDGs are indeed steps for a better well-being for every Family on earth; we must now apply this knowledge together, supporting other initiatives, policies and projects aimed at Family life improvement and to involve Governments which are not fully committed with this action and promote experience exchange among the ones which already believe in this work. Together, we can not only contribute to the achievement of the MDGs in their goals, but also push for further conditions to work Family issues in the context of development.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed for the continuous development of WFO’s work, in special the team of WFO working in Paris, Curitiba, Brussels, New York, Toronto, Tunis, Amman and Riyadh.
Finally, I would like to wish, on behalf of all of our members and partners, a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to all the Families of the world.
