The official opening of UN Climate Change Conference (COP29/ CMP 19/ CMA 6) in Baku, Azerbaijan, set an urgent and critical tone for addressing the accelerating impacts of climate change. The WMO’s State of the Climate 2024 Update, released as COP29 opened, underscored the immediacy of the challenge, with 2024 on track to be the warmest year yet. Referred to as the “Finance COP,” COP29 will center around discussions on climate finance, with an agreement expected on the New Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG), setting a new climate finance target that UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized as crucial for all nations’ well-being, including the wealthiest and powerful. This COP also marks a pivotal point ahead of the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) due in early 2025, with hopes that discussions will bolster momentum for increased ambition.
