UN DESA Voice February 2025: Putting people at the centre of development

30 years ago, world leaders united around a groundbreaking commitment to put people at the centre of development. At the World Summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, they pledged to eradicate poverty, promote social integration, and achieve full and productive employment for all.

Efforts to make this promise a reality continue. Every year at the Commission for Social Development, the international community gathers to accelerate the commitments made in the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development, while addressing emerging global challenges.

This year’s session will convene from 10 to 14 February in New York under the theme: “Strengthening solidarity, social inclusion and social cohesion to accelerate the delivery of the commitments of the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development as well as the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.

High-level panels and side events will bring together UN Member States, civil society, and experts to identify actionable strategies for building equitable and united societies.

As we approach the Second World Summit for Social Development taking place on 4-6 November in Doha, this year’s Commission highlights the importance of strengthening solidarity and social inclusion to achieve more cohesive societies, placing people at the centre of development. It is a call for renewed cooperation to ensure that no one is left behind in the global pursuit of social progress, justice and sustainable development.

As 2025 marks the 30th Anniversary of the 1995 Copenhagen Declaration, the Summit in Doha represents a pivotal moment for the global community to renew the commitment to inclusion, equality, and sustainability. It will be a chance to come together for a more resilient world, where everyone is included.

Welcome to the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s (SDSN) January Newsletter!

Last year marked the warmest year on record, exceeding the 1.5°C global warming limit and raising alarm across the globe. With five years left to achieve the SDGs, progress is more urgent than ever and the SDSN hit the ground running in January. In Malaysia, we hosted the ASEAN Workshop on Sustainable Development at Sunway University, exploring Southeast Asia’s SDG progress and obstacles.

In Brussels, Belgium, the SDSN launched the Europe Sustainable Development Report 2025, as well as an accompanying study on SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and the future of agri-food systems in the region, during a high-level event with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), featuring interventions by the European Commission, member states and civil society. The report reveals that SDG progress in the EU has largely stalled since 2020, and highlights persistent social, environmental, and biodiversity challenges in the EU, including sustainable agri-food systems. In a rapidly evolving geopolitical context, it also underlines the importance for the EU to strengthen its SDG/Green Deal Diplomacy with multiple global partners and contribute to an ambitious reform of the Global Financial Architecture, a few months before the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development which will take place in the EU in Seville, Spain.

Dear Friends,

As we enter 2025, we’re pausing to reflect on an incredible decade of progress – and what a journey it’s been! Over the past 10 years we’ve seen remarkable strides towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, though we know there is still a lot to tackle.

Back in 2015 – as the Global Goals were being finalised – a group of passionate creatives, communicators and campaigners came together with one bold mission: to make the Goals famous. Why? Because we knew that to have the biggest impact for people and planet, everyone needed to know about the Goals, and make acting on them a top priority. And that’s just what we did. Project Everyone was born and, in the words of our Co-founder, Richard Curtis:

‘Our motto has always been “To make things happen, you have to make things” and over the last 10 years we’ve used creativity and partnerships to get the Goals to Everyone.’

With this in mind, we are excited to share our Impact Report, Project Everyone: 10 Years of Impact. From creative campaigns that make audacious things possible, to unexpected partnerships that accelerate action – the report sets out everything we have accomplished over the last decade.

And we couldn’t have done it without you.

Our supporters, partners, friends and colleagues have been pivotal in making Project Everyone such a success, so thank you.

With just 5 years left to go until the 2030 deadline for the Global Goals, these partnerships are going to be more crucial than ever before, to make sure we make as much progress as we can, as quickly as we can. We have a unique window of opportunity ahead of us – an opportunity for unprecedented ambition and action. Join us in making the next five years the most successful to date!
